Instructions for gun violence restraining orders
Please thoroughly read all instructions before filing a gun violence restraining order.
Note: Employees of the Superior Court are prohibited by law from giving legal advice (Government Code §§ 24004 and 68082).
Submitting your forms for filing
- Complete all required information on each form.
- All forms must be dated and signed.
- If handwriting, print neatly using blue or black ink.
- Lined or colored paper is not accepted.
- Submit the original documents only. The court will provide a filed-stamped copy after the GVRO is entered.
- If filing by mail, include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with adequate postage. Documents not picked up within 30 days may be destroyed.
- Requests filed before 10:00 a.m. are typically ready for pickup at 3:30 p.m. the same day. Requests filed after 10:00 a.m. are typically ready the next business day.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office may serve your restraining order. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Interpreter needs
